FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Announcing the launch of Che Spotting

April 2009 — Che Spotting (www.CheSpotting.com) launched in April 2009.

The site features photos of the iconic Che Guevara image taken and submitted by travelers from around the world. Each week, the site posts a new picture of the proliferous icon.

The purpose of Che Spotting is not political. Rather, the site aims to raise awareness of the popular graphic Che Guevara image.

By showcasing travel-submitted photos of the image from around the world, Che Spotting recognizes the globalization of Che and celebrates the many ways the image is currently being used.

Since the site’s inception, it has posted pictures of the Che image taken in Vietnam, Spain, South Africa and Hong Kong, as well as the United States.

Che Spotting was started by two travelers, Kelly and Jen, who met and became friends during an educational exchange to Cuba in 2003. It was on this trip that the two women began to develop their fascination with Che’s image.

“Che is everywhere,” said Kelly, the site’s co-founder. “He’s as ubiquitous as Coca-Cola, McDonald’s or Nescafe. Once you know what he looks like, you’ll be amazed at how often you see him.”

“One of the reasons we’re so intrigued with Che,” said Jen, the site’s other creator, “is that he has crossed the border from political propaganda to pop art. You’re just as likely to see a Midwest, suburban kid wearing a Che t-shirt as you are to see his face being used as a call-to-action on some sort of special-interest, political flyer.”

Che Spotting also posts blog entries about current Che news stories and reviews Che-themed books, movies and web sites.

About Che:
Ernesto “Che” Guevara was born in Argentina and trained as a doctor. As a young man, he traveled across the South American continent on a motorcycle. His popular travelogue, The Motorcycle Diaries, was made into a movie in 2004. After earning his medical degree, Che journeyed to Central America and was introduced to Fidel Castro in Mexico. The two men became fast friends, and Che accompanied Castro to Cuba, where he became an integral part of the Cuban Revolution. Che is best known, perhaps, as a guerrilla leader. He was killed at the age of 39 in Bolivia while trying to incite a political uprising in that country.
