Kalk Bay, South Africa
We’re especially fond of this spotting. It captures two global icons side by side—Coca Cola and Che.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Che is as ubiquitous as Coca-Cola. He’s everywhere. You just have to learn to see him.
I didn’t have to look very hard to find Che in South Africa — he kept popping up all over the place. Especially in Kalk Bay, a once-upon-a-time small, fishing village that is now at the outer reaches of Cape Town’s urban sprawl.
I made the side trip to Kalk Bay while I was touring Cape Town because I’d heard about a restaurant there called Cape to Cuba. With a name like that, I was almost guaranteed a Che Spotting, and I wasn’t disappointed.
These colorful murals announced that we’d arrived. This is just one of the many pictures of Che I snapped that night.
Perhaps, if I ever find myself thinking I want to open a restaurant here at home, I’ll open a franchise of Cape to Cuba. According to its web site, the business is looking to expand.

What a fun and funky site! He IS everywhere!!! And I will be on the lookout…
Congratulations! Kelly, hope your fetish is satisfied…
When we visited relatives in Italy, I introduced myself as Jay, which they excitedly interpreted as Che. As we were ushered into their home, proudly displayed in the entry were framed photos of Abraham Lincoln and Che Guevara. Since we don’t speak Italian, we never discovered the meaning of the dual icons.
